Thursday, March 6, 2008

There be three things which go well, yea, four are comely in going: /A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any; /A greyhound; a he goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising up.
~The Bible

It’s time for the Thursday Thirteen again. If you have a Thursday Thirteen of your own, leave your website in the comments section and I’ll try my darndest to visit it 🙂

Thirteen Interesting Facts About Greyhounds
(and yes, that is one of my Greyhounds in the header enjoying a car ride)

  1. Greyhounds are the only breed of dog specifically mentioned in the Bible (Old Testament, Proverbs 30:29-31)
  2. The Greyhound is portrayed by Homer in his Odyssey (800 B.C.)—the only one to recognize Odyseus upon his return was Argus, his Greyhound.Click for a larger view
  3. The first proud Greyhound owners were kings and queens of ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece. Many ancient gods have also been pictured with Greyhounds as companions. Greyhounds were revered for their elegance and gentleness.
  4. Greyhounds are the oldest, purebred dog, dating back to the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. Paintings inside the tombs of the great Pyramids depicted Greyhounds.
  5. A law passed during the reign of King Canute stated “No mean person may keep any Greyhounds.” The law also stated that the destruction of a Greyhound should carry the same capital punishment as the murder of a man.
  6. President Abraham Lincoln had a Greyhound on his family coat-of-arms.
  7. The mythical Greek Goddess Diana is usually pictured with a Greyhound at her side.
  8. For many, many years the American make of car the Lincoln had a Greyhound as its hood ornament.
  9. Greyhounds are the fastest breed of dog—and the second fastest land animal after the cheetah—reaching top speeds of 40 miles per hour in three strides!
  10. Greyhounds can see CLEARLY for a distance of a quarter to one half-mile. Hence the name sighthounds… and why they should never be let off-leash in an unfenced area… you just never know what they might see to chase and they’ll be gone before you can call their name.
  11. Many people who are allergic to dogs are NOT allergic to Greyhounds, due to their short, sleek coat and skin type, which has more oil to it, thus less dandruff. Though it has more oil, Greyhounds do not have a “doggie” smell… even when soaking wet! In fact, unless rolling in mud (or something nastier!), they will only need a bath once or twice a year.
  12. Greyhounds have no fat layer on their bodies (about 3% body fat total) which makes them sensitive to the weather—coats in the winter and a cool place to rest in the summer! Because they have no fat layer, they also have almost no natural padding and love a soft place to lie down. Unless you provide them with a very thick, soft bed of their own, they will choose your bed or couch over the floor.
  13. Greyhounds are not hyper nor do they need a lot of space/time to run. Greyhounds are, in fact, couch potatoes and will have sleep patterns like lions (lions sleep 20 hours a day). Of course, there are exceptions to every rule and if you have a puppy… all rules are out the window!

  1. Any idea why the bus company was named after a Greyhound? I’ve got a Thursday thirteen too. Thanks for all the knowledge!

**Editor’s Note: Probably because they wanted people to think of something fast!

  2. Wow, thanks for the info. I had no clue about them being 2nd to the cheetah. My dad always wanted to adopt a greyhound.

  3. great list on the greyhound. Those are some really interesting facts.

You asked about our move over on my blog. We are going for a 4 year tour. (but things do seem to change.) If you go to Washington that would most likely be Bangor Naval base, IT IS BEAUTIFUL!!!

  4. Great list.
Most of us don’t know the history behind most breeds of dogs and which ones have been around the longest.

  5. This def. applies to me:

Many people who are allergic to dogs are NOT allergic to Greyhounds, due to their short, sleek coat and skin type, which has more oil to it, thus less dandruff. I have been allergic to most all dogs all my life, but my greyhound doesn’t even make me itch one bit!

  6. Interesting list. I have some friends who rescued a racing Greyhound. Their dog was like a huge cuddly cat.
